Torre de alarma de Barciela
A BarcielaCastrelo (Santa Mariña)36558 ForcareiPontevedra
This building dates back to the 15th century, and is located on the parochial lands of Santa Mariña de Castrelo church, built in the 16th century.
It is composed of three parts: the first one is rectangular with a vaulted niche; the second is a platform used for lighting fires to send light signals and for housing bells to send acoustic signals; while the third is a small façade with a slate cornice used to store a pinnacle that is no longer there.
Its function was to call neighbours to prayer and also to convene the general meetings, as well to raise the alarm if any bands of assailants were detected, especially during the Carlist wars.
There is also a sculpted cruceiro (stone cross) showing the Virgin stabbed with a sword in the surroundings of the parochial lands of Santa Mariña de Castrelo.
