Sports and archaeology along the course of the Oitavén River

Fornelos de Montes and Pazos de Borbén: a day of sports, an exceptional ensemble of rock carvings, and a dream-like waterfall

Ancient hidden settlements

09:30

We recommend you to go deep into A Cidade Hill with the first rays of the sun. Here you will find the remains of an ancient Iron-Age settlement (castro) and of the houses of the farmers who inhabited it later. One of the most striking constructions in the area is a well-preserved aqueduct in the middle of the woods. It was built in 1787 and used for channelling water to water crops grown in terraces along the river.

The River Oitavén and the reservoir of Eiras

11:30

On the tranquil banks of the River Oitavén, you can have a nice walk or play sports like kayaking. We suggest you to contact El Kiriko farm, where you can do activities with your family and friends. In the reservoir of Eiras, you can also enjoy activities like kayaking and paddle surfing, as well as an inflatable water park.

Inland cuisine

14:00

In Fornelos de Montes you should definitely try barbequed chanfaina, a type of spiced sausage made with pork that everybody rates with five starts. Delicious filloas (Galician style crepes) prepared on baking stones will put the final sweet touch.

Waterfall of Casariños

16:30

Start your afternoon at the foot of the amazing waterfall of Casariños, located near O Suído mountain range, which can be easily accessed from the recreation area of A Laxe. The cascade is made up by the union of two rivers, Barranqueira de Fonte Uceira and Barranqueira do Rego de Casariños. It is a rather unknown site but it is perfect to cool off during the summer.

Archaeological route

19:00

The numerous rock carvings found in Pazos de Borbén are without a doubt some of the most valuable treasures in this town. In Amoedo, in particular, you can do a hiking route including more than 80 archaeological elements of great interest, such as the rock carvings of Veiguiña Longa or Rego Novo, or dolmens like the ones of Leghoa Seca or Chan dos Curros.
