Corpus Christi de Ponteareas
Ponteareas (San Miguel)36860 PonteareasPontevedra
The town of Ponteareas has been creating spectacular floral carpets in about twenty streets since 1857, covering a total of 6000 m2 with vegetal tapestries, on the occasion of a Solemn Procession to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Thousands of visitors walk among the beautiful floral art highlighting the beauty of this parade until the religious procession walks over it, destroying the delicate petals. The origin of this tradition dates back to the early 20th century, when the potholes on the roads were filled in with flowers before the procession. The event was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1968 and in 2009 it was awarded international status.

Trivia Also noteworthy are the carpets outside Ponteareas, such as the one in Santiago de Compostela (on the occasion of the first visit of Pope John Paul II to Spain on 9 November 1982) and in the Vatican (also in his honour on 2 February 1983), as well as Caracas (1985 and 1998), Seville (1992), Buenos Aires (1992), Bahía (1993), and those created annually in the sister city of La Orotava since 1984. Origin and history It originated in a street known as Calle de Abaixo or Calle Real, and from there it extended to other parts of the town. There are records of the carpets from the second half of the 19th century, and in the first decades of the 20th century they began to be more elaborate, mostly with geometric patterns or decorated borders.Up to 1974 no institution promoted the efforts of the people of Ponteareas and the festival did not have many visitors. However, after a while it started to be mentioned in radio interviews, newspaper reports, etc., and in 1968 it became a Festival of National Tourist Interest. Finally, it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 2009 and the 3rd International Festival of Ephemeral Art was held in Ponteareas in 2010.
Itineraries and main events during its celebration The procession passes through several streets and squares: Plaza de Bugallal, Calle de Oriente, Plaza Mayor, Calle de los Ferreiros, Calle Doctor Fernández de la Vega, Calle Reveriano Soutullo and Avenida de la Constitución.
