Iglesia de Santa Liberata
Plaza de Santa LiberataBaiona (Santa María de Fóra)36300 BaionaPontevedra
This chapel was built in honour of Saint Wilgefortis, daughter of Baiona, who was a martyr and in 139 became the first woman to be crucified. It was built in the Italian Plateresque style.
Construction began in 1695 and was funded by the people so that her remains could be laid to rest there. The facade has two elegant towers and a niche with a statue of the Saint on the cross. The altarpiece depicts the crucifixion and has a series of high relief medallions representing the martyrdom of her eight sisters. On the sides of the altar are two well-preserved paintings: one of Saint Francis Xavier preaching to the people of India and another of the Virgin of Mount Carmel.
