The Deputación de Pontevedra raises awareness about the work of women in the primary sector through a new campaign aimed at promoting local products

The institution highlights the importance of the vital role played by women in a key sector for the province

The Deputación de Pontevedra is once again drawing attention to the indispensable work carried out by women in the primary sector through a new campaign that also reasserts its commitment with local businesses and products with the hashtags #ElixeProdutoLocal and #ElixeIgualdade.

The provincial council takes equality into consideration wherever a decision is taken, as it is a cross-cutting theme of its actions. The result of that commitment is a campaign aimed at showing and giving voice to all those great women working in the pastures, the sea, and the vegetable gardens with products that later become central ingredients in the kitchens of thousands of homes. Moreover, slowly but surely, they are also reclaiming their place on the menus of Michelin-starred restaurants in the province of Pontevedra.

This new action is part of the campaign “The province of Pontevedra in your basket”, launched in May. After the strong promotion of small and medium-sized businesses with the motto “Chose local shops”, now it is time to bring to the forefront women like Mónica Silva, Teresa Míguez, Pilar Nogueira or Marta Bugallo, who, along with thousands more, extract and take great care of the products that fill our shopping baskets and enhance our cuisine.

Using traditional methods

The Deputación de Pontevedra deems it necessary to highlight the invaluable contribution of these women, as they play an essential role in the production line that makes one of the main hallmarks of our province tourism-wise: our gastronomy. They do it by using traditional methods, safeguarding the future of the natural resources of As Rías Baixas, and ensuring a more sustainable exploitation in the long run, just like the provincial institution promotes under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

These essential sectors have been heavily affected by COVID-19, so now, more than ever, we need to buy local produce to alleviate the possible effects of the public health crisis on equal opportunities between women and men. By promoting the consumption of local products and making those who produce them visible, the Deputación de Pontevedra is helping tourism, business, and the hotel and restaurant industry in the province, all of which are heavily feminised sectors.
