Sierra de O Cando

The O Cando sierra is a natural reserve set an average altitude of 712 metres above sea level. It spans 5,458 hectares and is situated between the provinces of Pontevedra and Ourense. It boasts a beautiful rolling landscape: half mountain, with areas of scrubland and small oakwoods. From its craggy peaks, visitors can enjoy a wonderful mountainscape just a few kilometres from the Atlantic. It is considered a site of community interest by the European Union, and forms part of the Natura 2000 Network.

Features
Native aquatic flora and fauna Aquatic flora and fauna non-existent. Located in Cotobade, A Lama, Cerdedo, Forcarei, and Beariz Native terrestrial flora and fauna Three types of heathland predominate in the O Cando mountain range: Atlantic wet heaths, European dry heaths, and endemic ortho-Mediterranean heaths with gorse. Alluvial forests of Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior can also be found, as well as Galician-Portuguese oak forests, consisting of both Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica. The narcissus (Narcussis cyclamineus) and willow (Salix salvifoli) are abundant in some areas. As regards animals, the most common are pipits and lizards. The pipits include the tawny pipit (Anthus campestri), meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) and tree pipit (Anthus trivialis). The Iberian emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi) and gold-striped salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica) are notable examples of lizard. Dartford warblers (Sylvia undata), northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe), and common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) can also be found.
