Monte de A Peneda
O Viso (Santa María)36810 RedondelaPontevedra
The hill of A Peneda is between the municipalities of Redondela and Soutomaior and it is visible from almost any point of either region.
It has a height of 327 metres and offers views of the estuary of Vigo, but particularly of Rande, Redondela, the island of San Simón and Arcade. On the opposite side is the castle of Soutomaior with its impressive gardens. In the Middle Ages it was known as the fortress of Castrizán and it has great historical importance. It played a key role during the Irmandiño revolts against the nobility and the infighting amongst nobles. After the area was converted to Christianity, a church dedicated to the Virgin of A Peneda was built on the hilltop.
