Casa - Museo Cristobal Colón
This house, known as A Casa da Cruz, is situated in the town of Portosanto, in front of a shipyard which is said to be where Santa María was built (also known as ‘The Galician’, it was one of the ships that set sail to the Indies in 1492).
Records from this period show that a family of sailors with the Columbus surname lived in this house. Further proof is an inscription on a cruceiro (‘stone cross’) at the foot of the door that reads ‘Juan Colón R 1490’.
The house and the cruceiro were turned into a museum to house the ‘Galician Christopher Columbus Association – Celso García de la Riega’, which offers several exhibitions and conferences on the Galician origin of Columbus.
