Trivia A Festival of Tourist Interest since 2002, it is held in the recreational area near the pier due to the large number of visitors. The oyster of Arcade, Ostrea Edulis, is the most coveted on the market and the first to have been commercialised and exported from Galicia. It has a recognisable taste linked to its place of origin, the mouth of the Verdugo River. Origin and history Oyster farming dates from the Roman period, as there is evidence that the Roman road to Pontevedra and Santiago passed through Arcade and many people stopped there to taste the oysters. The first oyster festival took place in 1987 after it was suggested by oyster farmers. They proposed Arcade as an ideal place to celebrate it because it was where it began to be eaten, commercialised and exported to other places in Spain and Europe.
