Castillo de Torroña
There was a territory in the northwest of Galicia before the 5th century A.D. known as Turonio. The borders of this territory are not very clear, but it is possible that it went from the ocean up until Salceda de Caselas and towards the north it might have reached the region of Vigo. Some say that the limits of this legendary territory could have even gone up until the province of Ourense.
In this land there was a series of castles or fortresses, built to defend the territory from possible attacks of the Lusitanian, the pirates or other towns that arrived from the sea or the interior.
Thus, we try to locate the castle or fortress of Turonio or Toroña in different places. Several studies locate it in the town of Oia, nowadays known as Torroña.
This watchtower consists of two levels: one on a rocky massif and another circling it with a bit of inclination towards the outer wall. The highest place is where the castle itself was built. The enclosure has a polygonal shape, except the east side that has a curvature. The walls are made of large steep stones placed on top of natural rocks with a vertical fall that favours the defence of the castle. The shape of the stones is basically flat. Engraved ashlars have not been found. It is assumed that the wall was built with rough stones. That shows that it was a very primitive construction or was built in a hurry using materials from the area
