Features
Native aquatic flora and fauna Aquatic flora includes a large reedbed, very interesting from an ecological perspective, as it is a habitat for many species. Rushes are very significant in the area too. They grow together with some other species like the bulrush and the yellow flag.Aquatic fauna consists primarily of fish. Most species are migratory and spend much of their life in the ocean only to return to fresh water during reproductive periods to spawn, like the salmon, the sea trout or the hairtail. The lamprey is one of the most well-known species of the estuary. In terms of amphibians, the most noteworthy are the Perez's frog, European tree frog, salamander, common toad, natterjack toad, European green lizard, grass snake and deaf adder.
Native terrestrial flora and fauna Flora in the estuary consists of a riparian forest with alders and willows. At the mouth of the river, adapted to water and sand, the dominant species is the maritime pine, which forms a thick forest with other trees like the oak, cork oak, broom and acacia. The dunes and the coast are covered by small plants living in harsh conditions, like the thrift, sea daffodil, stock and thistle.
Fauna consists mostly of migratory birds. Grey herons and little egrets visit the area in the winter, and sometimes other birds like the common spoonbill, pied avocet or glossy ibis do as well. Species like the curlew, common sandpiper, bar-tailed godwit, golden plover, dunlin, mallard, common teal, merganser and common pochard are also plentiful.
