Fortaleza militar de Goián
Goián (San Cristovo)36750 TomiñoPontevedra
The Fortress of San Lourenzo is part of the border system of Goián (Spain) and Vilanova de Cerveira (Portugal) in the Miño River.
On the Galician riverbank it is composed of the Fort of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, the Fortresses of As Chagas, A Barca and San Lourenzo, the Towers of Os Correa and Os Ratos (all of them in Goián) and the Fortress of Santiago Carrillo de Medos (in Estás). On the Portuguese side, it is formed by the fortress square and medieval complex of Vilanova de Cerveira, the Watchtower of Espíritu Santo and the Fortress of Lovelhe. The system is evenly balanced, as it allows for the populations of the two countries to face each other.
The Fortress of San Lourenzo was built in case force was needed in the event of a conflict with Portugal after the Restoration War was over in 1668. However, due to its dimensions, it was more of a way to control the river border.
