Conjunto Histórico - Artístico de Pontevedra
36002 PontevedraPontevedra
The historic city centre, declared a Historical-Artistic Site in 1951, is one of the best preserved in Spain. There, beautiful streets with porticoes lead to a myriad of colourful squares. A relaxed walk through the city centre allows us to see the ruins of the old Santo Domingo Monastery, the best example of the Gothic style in Galicia and nowadays part of the Provincial Museum. Only the exterior of the convent, the apse of the old temple (which houses some archaeological pieces) and a large amount of coats of arms still stand today. Nearby is the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor, also a National Monument. Its Plateresque façade of remarkable size was built by order of the Guild of Fishermen in the 15th century, and located in its exterior is the Christ of Safe Journeys, to which the sailors prayed before going out to sea. Not far are several conventional churches, such as the San Francisco Church and its beautiful gardens, the Santa Clara Church, the San Bartolomé Church and the Virgen Peregrina Sanctuary, which form resembles the scallop shells that symbolise the Camino de Santiago (‘Way of Saint James’). Pontevedra, 65 kilometres away from Santiago, is a must in the Portuguese way of the Camino, just like the Via XIX Roman road (Bracara–Lucus–Asturica). It is best to explore the historic centre by walking, paying attention to the street names and the unique spaces between the popular and noble houses. There are numerous squares that shape the urbanism of the historic centre, among which some significant names stand out: the Herrería square, where the blacksmiths worked on the forge; the Leña square, where the wood used to heat the kitchens was sold; the Teucro square, named after the Greek archer to which the foundation of Pontevedra is attributed, and the Verdura square, where the farm products were sold. Today the Leña square contains the three manor houses that form the Provincial Museum, property of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, whose Foundation considerably helps spread the Galician culture. Pontevedra is a noble town where we can find many unique buildings that represent the history of the city.
