The origins of the Biblioteca Central (Central Library) are in the Biblioteca Popular de Vigo, built in 1942 as ordered by the Ministerio de Educación Nacional (Spanish Ministry of Education). After some years, it was relocated to the Romil Street.
The Central Library of Vigo is one of the first examples of architectural Modernism brought to the city by Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez, who had arrived in Vigo as a military master builder.
On 28 October 2013, the plenary session of the City Council of Vigo agreed to change the name of the library to Biblioteca Pública Juan Compañel. Nowadays it is part of the Galician Public Libraries network
