O Porriño blends perfectly with the historic heritage it represents. It is the hometown of Antonio Palacios, an architect of great sensibility who adopts an experimental and investigative stance regarding traditional forms and the expressive possibilities of materials. This way he formulates a creative and original expressionist style of architecture. His first design in the city was the Fuente del Cristo, a fountain greatly influenced by Modernism built between 1904 and 1907. In 1909 he designed the Botica Nova, which became his brother’s pharmacy and residence, and a place that hosted many intellectual social gatherings in the back. In 1918 he designed a metropolitan entrance to the Madrid Metro built on Gran Vía. It was moved to O Porriño when the city decided to replace it in 1971. He also designed the current Council of O Porriño, built in front of his childhood home between 1919 and 1924. The building has since become a reference point of the town.
