The historic centre of Vigo returns to the 19th century for a weekend every year to celebrate its most significant festival. A popular uprising on 28 March 1809 expelled the French from the city, making Vigo the first European city to expel Napoleon's army from a conquered square. This is commemorated every year on the streets of the historic centre, which has a large craft and food market and is the hub of the festival. Visitors dress the part and reenact the fight between the French and the people of Vigo, until the latter emerge victorious with the fall of the town’s door in Gamboa Street. It was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2012.
