Forcarei Astronomical Observatory

Located in the heart of inland Galicia, in an area distinguished by extremely low light pollution, the Forcarei Astronomical Observatory (OAF) is one of the region’s most important scientific and outreach facilities. Its privileged location provides exceptionally dark and clear skies, ideal for observing the universe under optimal conditions.

The observatory is managed by the Fundación Ceo, Ciencia e Cultura (FC3), an institution dedicated to research, scientific education, and astronomical outreach. Its work makes this site a reference point both for the scientific community and for educational activities aimed at the general public.

The OAF consists of a two-storey structure. The upper level houses a 5-metre dome containing a powerful 51-centimetre Ritchey-Chrétien telescope, designed for high-precision observation of distant celestial objects. The lower floor contains the control centre, where the telescope operations and observations are managed.

Thanks to its location in an area with 360º visibility and favourable atmospheric conditions, the observatory offers a unique experience for studying the night sky, allowing visitors to clearly observe stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies.

In addition, the Forcarei Astronomical Observatory is part of the “Baixo o Ceo das Rías Baixas” Astrotourism Network, an initiative that brings together some of the best stargazing locations in the province of Pontevedra. This recognition reinforces its status as a leading astrotourism destination, where science, outreach and nature come together under one of the clearest skies in Galicia.
