This museum aims to promote the cultural heritage directly or indirectly linked to the mine of Fontao through the recovery of documents, plans, publications, photography and testimonies of anything related to this topic. It also has the objective of preserving and valorising the industrial and mining heritage of the mines of Fontao.
Extractive activities in Fontao were one of the driving forces of the national economy for years, with wolfram being the key product of Spanish exports. Beyond the black gold fever linked to different battles, the history of the mine of Fontao tells the story of a leading industry that made the most of the metals extracted from this mine.
Fontao was the meeting place of relevant entrepreneurs, technicians, traffickers, adventures, spies on the run and republican prisoners. An industrial and mining heritage developed over the course of 100 years of extractive activities, combined with the geological and intangible cultural heritage of the area, with all the characteristic elements of mining.
Its collection can be found in some public facilities of the mining town of Fontao: the old cinema, the chapel, schools and outdoor areas.
