This cathedral is the best example of the city of Tui’s artistic wealth. It began construction in the 12th century and the layout, outer walls, north entrance and the capitals’ iconography are all in the Romanesque style. It was the first cathedral in the Iberian Peninsula to have a Gothic facade. The tympanum has different scenes associated with the birth of Christ. Noteworthy in the interior are the altarpiece, the reliquary altar of the Relic Chapel, the Cathedral Museum and the wonderful cloister, the only Gothic one of all the Galician cathedrals. The views from the Soutomaior Tower are also outstanding, as well as the Romanesque chapter house from the 12th century.
