Pazo de Bazán was built in the 17th century by Pedro Bazán Torres, a clergyman and the town’s parish priest. It was owned by the Bazán family for more than a century, and it was restored in the 18th century by Pedro Pablo Bazán de Mendoza (famous for his Voltaire translations) and Luisa Bazán, great grandmother of renowned writer Emilia Pardo Bazán. This traditional manor house was acquired by the State in the 20th century and handed over to the Ministry of Information and Tourism in the 60s, which decided to completely restore it and use it as a Parador Nacional (a state-owned hotel). However, it was in such bad shape that they decided to destroy the building and erect the current one in its place. Ever since then, this pazo has housed a Parador Nacional.
