The town of Ponteareas has been creating spectacular floral carpets in about twenty streets since 1857, covering a total of 6000 m2 with vegetal tapestries, on the occasion of a Solemn Procession to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Thousands of visitors walk among the beautiful floral art highlighting the beauty of this parade until the religious procession walks over it, destroying the delicate petals. The origin of this tradition dates back to the early 20th century, when the potholes on the roads were filled in with flowers before the procession. The event was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1968 and in 2009 it was awarded international status.
