Its coat of arms is that of the Aldao, Moscoso, Figueroa, Sarmiento, Zúñiga, Lobera, Bermúdez, Reino, Montenegro, Sotomayor and Mariño families. In the 15th century, Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez lived here, and it was the site of lively discussions between thinkers and writers such as Valle Inclán, of whom there is now a bronze sculpture presiding over the square
