Wine and lamprey - A Paradanta
Descripción

Savour a landscape of high mountains, quiet valleys and rivers that culminate in the Miño. A fertile land in which its inhabitants have maintained customs and activities closely linked to nature, such as lamprey fishing, vine cultivation, the exploitation of wood from the forests or the transformation of beeswax.

We invite you to relive this tradition by visiting the towns of Arbo, Crecente, A Cañiza and Covelo.

The mountains of A Paradanta give their name to a region of highlands where rivers and abundant streams originate, creating small valleys that end in the Miño river. In Arbo the art of lamprey fishing is still preserved thanks to tradition and the old pesqueiras, constructions in the river that were used to catch lamprey. The region also has a deep-rooted wine-growing tradition, which is currently booming with the improvement of the vineyards. A visit to the Centro de Interpretación do Viño e da Lamprea is a must, as it explains the tradition and history of these two typical products of the locality and, by extension, of the region.

A Paradanta also offers the possibility of discovering other traditional activities, such as the elaboration and transformation of beeswax, which was carried out in artisan workshops, or the wood industry extracted from its forests. The enjoyment of the natural landscapes, through hiking or other sports, is a stimulus for the senses, which we recommend culminating with the tasting of the emblematic products, such as the Bordeaux-style lamprey and the ham from A Cañiza, paired with a good local wine.

Land of borders, water and history - O Condado
Descripción

Travel through the valley of the river Tea and its tributaries and discover the history and tradition of this land through its museums and landscapes. You will discover the enduring petroglyphs, forts or imposing castles that dominate and control the territory. You will be surprised by the traditions that have been maintained, such as the unique lamprey fishing, the centuries-old spas with curative waters or the excellent local wines.

Discover the region of O Condado, which runs through the towns of As Neves, Salvaterra de Miño, Ponteareas, Mondariz and Mondariz-Balneario. Travel through the valley of the river Tea and its tributaries and discover the history and tradition of this land through its museums and landscapes.

The petroglyphs - open-air rock engravings - dot the landscape and bear witness to the beliefs of the Bronze Age communities and the control of the territory, as did the monumental Iron Age forts centuries later, located in places of visual dominance, or the medieval castles, which defended ancient borders and which provide emblematic images such as the imposing Sobroso castle.

The river Tea and its tributaries rise in the mountains and its waters moved ancient mills which still survive in natural sites of great beauty. These rivers also bring life to the region, from the tradition of lamprey fishing to the fertility of the orchards and vineyards which produce excellent wines.

Earth and water intermingle to create springs which, since ancient times, have persisted as places of health, rest and enjoyment. Thermal baths in centuries-old spas, such as Mondariz, invite us to reconcile nature, tradition and health in an incomparable setting.

The sacred in nature and the control of the landscape - O Baixo Miño
Descripción

Taste a region full of contrasts in which the Miño and the Atlantic draw diverse landscapes: from the high mountains of A Grova and O Galiñeiro, the rivers that irrigate the land to the calm estuary that connects the land with the immensity of the ocean. The Miño acts as a natural border between Portugal and the city of Tui, which, since ancient times, has been a strategic city, Episcopal see and treasures a valuable religious heritage.

Travel through the towns of O Rosal, A Guarda, Tomiño and Tui and discover the authenticity and identity of O Baixo Miño, closely linked to the sea and the river Miño. A strategic territory since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the citania of Santa Trega, which dominated the mouth of the river Miño in the Castro and Roman times, or the castles located in essential locations for river control.

But perhaps one of the places with most history in O Baixo Miño is the city of Tui, which in Roman times became an important urban centre and communication hub, as evidenced by the passage of the Roman Via XIX, which ended in Braga (Portugal) crossing the Miño. This communication continued with the well-known international bridge, which joins the two banks of the river and, consequently, establishes an unalterable communication between the city and the Portuguese country. Tui is also an artistic and monumental treasure that exudes religiosity: an episcopal see, which, with its cathedral and important collections of sacred art, manifests ecclesiastical power, but also reflects religious sobriety with austere monasteries, convents or churches in hidden streets and alleys in the old part of the town.

The links between the sea and the countryside are very present in the region, as shown by the Museo do Mar or the Roman salt mines of A Guarda, which claims its seafaring heritage, or the ethnographic museums and the mills, legacies of the peasant exploitation of the fertile valleys.

Pure Atlantic - O Baixo Miño and Vigo
Descripción

Discover the breeze, the aroma and the history of the Vigo estuary: pure Atlantic where the unique natural landscape merges with the presence of forts, monasteries and castles that guarded and protected the place from unknown threats coming from the ocean.

The Vigo estuary has also been the scene of active maritime trade, especially strategic on the routes between Europe and America, as well as a calm bay, ideal for shellfish farming.

Immerse yourself in the pure Atlantic by visiting the towns of Oia, Nigrán, Baiona and Redondela. The Vigo estuary is a piece of the Atlantic that penetrates the land and creates nooks and crannies, inlets, bays and anchorages. It is a natural paradise, with beautiful islands such as the Cíes, an area of high ecological value with crystal-clear waters and fine sandy beaches which, thanks to its mountains, protects the estuary from the furious Atlantic storms. The calm sea of the estuary favours the installation of mussel and other shellfish farms, a gastronomic treasure that goes perfectly with the excellent wines of the Rías Baixas DO.

The Vigo estuary is also full of stories. Its strategic position meant that surveillance of the coastline was an essential task in the Iron Age, with the establishment of forts strategically located along the coastline, and also in more recent times, with the construction of the castle of Monterreal, which protects the entrance to the estuary, or the monastery of Oia, a fortified monastery by the sea.

In addition, the Atlantic Ocean was the return journey of daring expeditions and brave sailors. Testimony to this is the House of Navigation in Baiona, which recounts such important historical facts as being the first European place to receive the news of the discovery of America. The estuary was also a gateway for plundering and invasions, such as the famous naval battle of Rande in 1702, in which an Anglo-Dutch expedition sacked the Vigo estuary.

Descripción

Through its landscapes, heritage and museums, you'll discover the great secrets of the culture of the sea in this land.

The entire Vigo estuary is dotted with heritage that connects us with its seafaring activity and gastronomy: the Galician Museum of the Sea offers an extensive tour of the various marine ecosystems and brings us closer to the deep-rooted culture of the sea, the Iron Age forts reflect an important shellfish farming activity and the Roman-era salt mines show the ancient tradition of the salted fish industries, a gastronomic delicacy already for the Romans. During the 19th century, the canning industries became an important economic driving force, as can be seen in the numerous old factories and the interesting ANFACO Museum of the canning industry.

But the Vigo estuary hides many more stories, such as the importance of its control to prevent incursions from the sea that could break inland, especially during the Middle Ages. For this reason, a castle like Soutomaior Castle was strategic for the surveillance of the territory.

Descripción

The pazos and wineries are scattered throughout the territory and history teaches us that forts, castles and monasteries dominated a landscape with a strong personality.

Between rivers and springs - Caldas
Descripción

Savour the region of Caldas and immerse yourself in its waters. The sea, peaceful estuaries, rivers and curative waters that spring from springs, shape the territory and define the history of the region. On their way, the rivers Ulla and Umia and their tributaries dress the landscape with lagoons, waterfalls and lush forests, but they are also paths full of stories.

Travel through the towns of Valga, Catoira, Caldas de Reis, Cuntis, Moraña, Pontecesures and Portas, and discover the seduction of water. The region of Caldas is formed by the estuary of the river Ulla to the north and the middle and upper courses of the river Umia to the south. It is a territory with abundant surface water - rivers - and also with abundant groundwater with curative properties. The origin of the region and also of the town of Caldas derives precisely from the thermal springs, already used by the Romans and which became luxurious spas in the 19th century.

The rivers form landscapes of great beauty and, along their course, they form wild forests among rocks and mosses, lagoons and pools of green water and high waterfalls, ending in calm estuaries and wetlands, a refuge for migratory birds. But the rivers have also marked the history of this land, such as the numerous bridges, many of them of Roman origin, which facilitated communication between the two banks, or the Torres de Oeste, which controlled river traffic along the river Ulla. Several museums and interpretation centres show all this natural and patrimonial wealth, such as the Museum of History of Valga, which brings us closer to the history of the city and shows us the natural heritage of the Ulla estuary.
