The collection is on show in a rationalist building, the Casa de las Artes, from 1939, designed by Romualdo de Madariaga. It was designed as the Bank of Spain until, in the mid-1980s, the Ministry of Economy and Finance decided to remove all branches that were not in the capital cities and the provinces, and it became part of municipal heritage. The Torras collection started in 1998, as a gift given to the city by the Vigo-born artist Luis Torras. Following the agreement signed by the Regional Ministry of Culture and the artist, the Casa das Artes became the permanent headquarters of the collection, represented by 50 donated paintings and a further 17 on loan. Considered one of the most outstanding contemporary Galician artists, Luis Torras reveals his predilection for landscapes and portraits, using a meticulous technique and a style that leads to a singular fauvism from a post-impressionism with hints of cubist.
