The Ruta da Pedra e da Auga (the ‘route of stone and water’) follows the riverside of the Armenteira River, which rises in Mount Castrove, at 370 metres above sea level, and passes through the municipalities of Meis and Ribadumia. The route lets visitors enjoy the natural wealth and the stone constructions built in this entourage. It is a group of water mills, built in 1700 on the left bank of the River Armenteira, in Serén. These were the great plants of the flour industry, used to mill different types of grain and cereal. It has now become a picturesque site which combines traditional culture with a unique landscape. During the 6.5 km walk, you will also see the sculptures of Aldea Labrega, which is where the Pontevedra Stone Masons' School recreated in stone the folk culture of the O Salnés district and Galicia in general, including crosses, raised granaries, wash houses, chapels, water troughs, etc. The crown jewel of this route in such a natural and ethnographic surrounding is the Monastery of Armenteira, an architectural gem of the 12th century with additions from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, nowadays inhabited by the Cistercian Order.
