The building was designed by Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez in 1888. It was built in two phases: first the part on the Carral and Montero Ríos streets corner and then, in 1904, the building was finished with the construction of the Montero Ríos front. The same construction scheme was used in both phases to keep the cohesion in the building. The space in front of the Montero Ríos facade was declared a public square in 1889 and housed a very busy terrace for many years.   The building has kept the initial project structure and housed the Universal Hotel after its construction. Years later, the building was bought by the AC Hotels chain. They refurbished the interior of the building to open the current AC Palacio Universal Hotel
