This is an exceptional area for birds, as is confirmed by the designation of Punta de Carreirón as a Special Protection Area for birds and its inclusion in the Intertidal Natural Park of Umia–O Grove, A Lanzada, Punta do Carreirón and Lagoa de Bodeira. Two bird hides especially designed for bird watching in Punta Carreirón are available for experiences like watching a heron fishing in the marsh or a flock of ducks flying. It has a great diversity of ecosystems, from dunes and marshes to scrubland and pine woods or the impressive underwater landscape on the coast. The park consists of a peninsula connected to the island by a tombolo with salterns covering a perfectly preserved 1.3-km2 area with trails. The rugged coastline is made up of coves, fine-sanded beaches and points eroded by the sea, rain and wind. There are also lagoons, marshes and diverse flora and fauna, as it is a staging area for migratory birds.
