Located in the heart of the city of Pontevedra, the Ruins of Santo Domingo are one of its most noteworthy historic and artistic elements. The convent, which belonged to the Dominican Order, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and abandoned after the ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizábal in 1834. Now the remains are the oldest part of the Museum of Pontevedra.
Dominicans arrived in the city in the late 12th century and began the Gothic temple in the 13th century. In the 18th century they tried to restore it in the neoclassical style, but it was left unfinished. The demolition of the Gothic apse in the first church was also never completed. The only preserved parts are the high altar and the side chapels at the east end. Apart from the remains from the church, there is also a wide range of shields, guild headstones and several statues still standing.
