These gardens were created in the late eighties by the Provincial Council of Pontevedra to cover the gap in plant pathology within the agricultural sector. The aim was to find solutions for phytosanitary problems that lead to damage to or even loss of crops.
When the Council bought the land in 1963, there was already an old camellia, two examples of Phoenix canariensis, Magnolia grandiflora, Crataegus azarolus and Melaleuca armillaris which are still present today. After the creation of the Plant Pathology Station of Areeiro, camellias started to be planted because they were considered the most representative species of the province, leading to the Council’s camellia collection.
About 90 specimens of Camellia japonica were planted between 1985 and 1987, as well as 27 of Camellia sasanqua and 12 of Camellia reticulata. Today the garden has more than 650 varieties of 30 species and more than 70 camellia hybrids. There are more than 160 varieties in the nursery waiting to be transplanted.
