This Neo-Classical cemetery is the biggest one of the capital. It was built and designed at the end of the 19th century by the architect Alejandro Rodríguez-Sesmero because the old graveyard of the city was already too small. Since then it has been refurbished several times. One of the most important modifications was the one carried out in the 1960s when the Romanesque church of San Mamede of Moldes was moved to its premises. In the San Mauro cemetery there is a mix of diverse periods and architectonic styles, parted pillars, baldachins or significant mausoleums. Some of the most important graves are the ones from Ramiro Trapote, made of marble; the poet Andrés Muruais; Eduardo Vincenti and Dolores Montero, with bronze busts; and the violinist Manuel Quiroga Losada, decorated with a sculpture made by Francisco Asorey. Another architectonic referent in the route around this churchyard is the pantheon of the Sánchez Cantón family, with an image of San Francisco that belonged to the Baroque chapel of Os Santos in Mollabao. The cemetery includes a section where some of the victims from the 1936 reprisals are buried, like the politician Alexandre Bóveda or the philosopher Indalecio Armesto. The latter’s grave stands out because of its great masonic symbology.
