Where the sea reached the door of the house
It has always kept the title of Villa granted to it in 1778 by King Carlos III.
Bouzas expresses the authentic seafaring character of As Rías Baixas like few other places in the province of Pontevedra. This town was independent from Vigo until 1904 and today it still preserves a character and traditions that make it unique and differentiate it from the rest of the city.
In 1778, King Carlos III granted it the official title of Villa, which it never lost despite being annexed to Vigo.
In 1778, King Carlos III granted it the official title of Villa, which it never lost despite being annexed to Vigo. But its uniqueness goes back many years, as in 1501 Bouzas already had the right to free trade in the port and exemption from customs duties, as well as a salt warehouse and salt deposit, so that the Sea Guild could salt without limitation.
Its urban beach and cobbled historic centre give it a very special character and much of the neighbourhood's life today is concentrated around the seafront promenade, from where you can admire the beauty of its buildings and the silhouette of the shipyards. In the oldest streets, such as Alfolís, there are still buildings with a typical seafaring structure, whose door the sea used to reach in times gone by.
