This festival dates from 1875, when an article titled ‘On the Banks of the Ulla River’ in the newspaper El Heraldo Gallego detailed the creation of a carnival troupe in the parish of Oca, A Estrada. The exact origin of the Xenerais (‘the Generals’) is unknown, but it is believed that it comes from the French invasion of 1846. It is celebrated in a total of 33 areas covering eight municipalities near the Ulla River, three of which are in the province of Pontevedra: Vila de Cruces, Silleda and A Estrada. Tradition, together with the impressive costumes and horses, resulted in this event being declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2013, where people have verbal battles in which they mock and satirise social issues.
