The thermal area of Mondariz is made up of several buildings offering a wide range of services. The historic Gran Hotel, designed by architect Jenaro de la Fuente, is one of the highlights along with the gardens. Also noteworthy is the old Hotel-Sanatorium, a project by architect Antonio Palacios that was never finished. The hotel, the statue of Peinador and the thermal fountains of Troncoso and Gándara were built above it. The fountain of Troncoso can be accessed from a path along the Tea River, and the fountain of Gándara is under a granite pavilion built by Palacios. Finally, other features like the golf course, the Municipal Museum of Water and the Water Palace complete this large leisure area.
The spa went through periods of prosperity and was visited by illustrious figures from the cultural, philosophical and political spheres like Castelao, Queen Isabella of Portugal or Emilia Pardo Bazán. It had its own printing press, which published the weekly Lana Temporada and the Mondariz magazine, and it even had its own coin, the Peinador.
The Civil War changed life in the area, and a fire in 1973 completely ended its golden era, although today the spa has been completely restored and adapted to the new century. The thermal area has a tradition spanning more than a century, and today the centre offers the latest techniques using medicinal mineral waters, which are ideal for health, beauty and relaxation treatments. The spa offers professional and personalised services under the direction of a medical team.
