Population growth, coupled with an unprecedented technological revolution, makes this 21st century the key moment that the planet needs to become aware of finite resources and the management of a global economy that benefits all people equally. Faced with this new paradigm, public administrations such as the Pontevedra Provincial Council and Rías Baixas Tourism join forces to make available to all the agents involved in the management and enjoyment of a tourist destination the actions, measures and tools for environmental protection necessary for the territory of the province of Pontevedra to be a sustainable, competitive and differentiated space for all. Sustainable tourism implies not harming the environment or society, as it develops its activity trying to generate the least possible impact. For all this, among the actions that the Provincial Council of Pontevedra makes available to the Rías Baixas destination are three manuals of good practices whose advice and recommendations are based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism of the World Tourism Organization and the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism ST+20.

The Manual of good sustainable practices aimed at tourist establishments aims to guide entrepreneurs and professionals of tourist establishments (hotels, hostels, rural houses, restaurants, bars, cafés, active tourism companies...) on environmental and social improvements that allow them to consolidate their establishments, activities and destinations as the most sustainable possible.

The Manual of good practices in sustainability for travel agencies, tourist offices and tourist guides aims to help organise trips that are an enriching and sustainable experience, as it contains numerous recommendations for implementing a policy of sustainability when working and offering their services, which necessarily involve the use of the territory and its resources. These sustainable practices make it possible to maintain an environmental, natural and heritage environment that is better cared for and more attractive to tourists and the local population, as well as to raise their awareness. Travel agencies, tourist offices and tourist guides agree that they have the power to promote sustainable and non-sustainable services, places, traditions and products.

The Responsible Tourism Handbook contains advice and recommendations to help make travel an enriching as well as a sustainable experience. Tourists have a direct or indirect impact on the economic, socio-cultural and environmental sustainability of the place they visit. The goal of responsible tourism is to ensure that this impact is not negative, or as little negative as possible. What are good travellers like? Those who travel and enjoy a destination without leaving a trace, respect the people and their traditions, value the authenticity of each place, have fun and also choose services committed to sustainability and tourism quality. They are responsible tourists.
