Rías Baixas Way of St. James' Way Guide

Crossroads of Ways: Six beautiful Jacobean routes cross the province of Pontevedra.

From Portugal, the Meseta, and even by sea. The routes along the Way of St. James in As Rías Baixas are splendid and varied, and all of them have a special charm. Up to six routes cross this destination through the interior and the coast and offer unforgettable experiences. Nature, heritage, culture and gastronomy come together in these beautiful itineraries.

Two of them come from the neighbouring country: the Portuguese Way and the Coastal Way. Two others, the Vía de la Plata and the Camino de Invierno, enter the province through the interior. One more, the Ruta do Mar de Arousa e do Río Ulla, covers by boat the last stretch of the legendary crossing of the stone boat with the remains of the Apostle. And the last one follows through the region of O Salnés the route taken by Father Sarmiento in his 1745 Journey to Galicia.

Depending on the route they choose, walkers will find cliffs, beaches, fervenzas, forges, pazos, historic towns and thermal or seaside villages along the way. The formidable landscapes of As Rías Baixas follow one after the other and leave an indelible mark on the walkers.

It is impressive to walk around the circular walls of the Santa Trega hill fort and enjoy the views of the Atlantic Ocean and the estuary of the river Miño. The city of Tui, presided over by the imposing cathedral, will take us back to the Middle Ages, and in Pontevedra we will enjoy the atmosphere of the squares and monuments.

Vigo, the largest city in Galicia, keeps intact its essence linked to the sea and offers incredible panoramic views of the estuary and the Cíes Islands. In the inland regions of Deza and Tabeirós-Terra de Montes, the fervenzas and fairytale forges make up an ideal setting with monasteries and manor houses. The thermal waters of Caldas de Reis offer the perfect rest before covering the final route to Santiago. The gastronomy of O Salnés, its villages and vineyards, augur unique wine tourism and culinary experiences.
