The chapel known as “capilla de la Misericordia” was built in 1595 as ordered by Felipe II at the entrance of Monterreal. In 1656 it was rebuilt in its current location inside the town’s historical centre. It has a rectangular floor plan and a simple appearance. Its baroque retable is presided by a big Crucified Christ, whose cross came from Mexico with gold coins during a time when sending this metal was forbidden. It was a gift from the people from Baiona that lived there to pay for the rebuilding of the chapel. Several religious images are kept inside, like the Christ of the Lanterns, Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Elizabeth or the Immaculate Conception. The temple is owned by the Hermandad de la Santa Casa de Paz y Misericordia, formed in 1574 in honour of Saint Elizabeth. It is the oldest brotherhood of Galicia.
