Baiona was the first town in Europe to receive news of the discovery of America. La Pinta, captained by Martín Alonso Pinzón, arrived on 1 March 1493.
A replica of the ship was built on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the discovery and is now permanently docked in the harbour and open for visitors. The interior was restored in 1999 and provided with all the features of Columbian times, both from the Christian and the indigenous Taíno cultures.
Visitors can see the ship as it arrived in Baiona in 1493 and experience the discovery by observing the figures representing the crew and the American natives, as well as replicas of exotic plants, animals and metals found in the New World. It also contains interpretation panels and interactive games.
