Praza de Galicia is the heart of the urban area, a humble fishing village that turned into a magnificent town with an exuberant and progressive lifestyle.
Originally it was a wetland area, that turned into a square known as Praza do Sol, as there was the obelisk, a tall column with four identical faces that converge at the top, a monument of Egyptian origin devoted to the Sun God. In 1931 it was replaced by a monumental luminous clock, the only public one in town, and so the square became Praza do Reloxo (Clock Square). Years later, it was replaced by a luminous fountain, as a symbol of innovation and modernity for this small town.
In 2018, it was completely restored to pedestrianise the area and turn it into a space for rest and enjoyment, with a fountain that reinterprets the course of the river as a nod to the past. The square is a humanised space with a functional and aesthetic purpose.
