The weather in this area
Located on Monte do Castro, at an altitude of 279 metres and close to the provincial boundary, the San Miguel de Castro Viewpoint is one of the most remarkable scenic spots in A Estrada. Situated alongside the Camino de Santiago, this natural balcony offers outstanding views over the meanders of the Ulla River, the fertile valley landscape and the unmistakable silhouette of Pico Sacro, one of Galicia’s most iconic mountains.
Also known as Eira dos Mouros or Trocastello, the site preserves an important historical legacy. This hill was once home to an ancient Iron Age hillfort settlement, of which remains of defensive walls and the surrounding ditch can still be seen today. At the summit stands a hut inspired by traditional hillfort dwellings, built in 1975, which pays tribute to the area’s earliest inhabitants.
From this privileged viewpoint, visitors can enjoy spectacular views across the Ulla Valley, where the iconic Gundián Bridge stands out as a remarkable feat of civil engineering set within an exceptionally beautiful natural environment. The combination of archaeological heritage, river landscapes and mountain scenery makes this a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to discover the essence of inland Galicia.
The San Miguel de Castro Viewpoint is also part of the “Baixo o Ceo das Rías Baixas” Astrotourism Network, an initiative that highlights some of the province’s best locations for stargazing. Its wide horizons and high-quality night skies provide exceptional conditions for observing the stars, creating a unique meeting point between nature, history and astronomy.
A place where the legacy of ancient hillfort communities, the beauty of the Ulla Valley and the vastness of the night sky come together to create an unforgettable experience.
