The apparition in 1846 of the Virgin of La Salette in the Alps spread across Europe. The news reached Francisco Mª de Rivas, who in 1863 founded this sanctuary in her honour in the parish of Siador. It became the first Spanish sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette. Devotion kept growing so they ordered a statue of the Virgin made of wood by sculptor Magariños de Santiago, who completed it in May 1864. On 26 June 1864 it was carried on the shoulders by many devoted followers from the capital of Galicia to Siador. In 1984 the sanctuary and the parish began to be managed by La Salette fathers from Valladolid and, in 1986, the Spiritual Centre and Trade School of the Missionary Community was established. The Foundation-Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette was created in 2001 with the aim of promoting the sanctuary and the conservation and restoration of the building and its surroundings.
