This temple was designed by architect Antonio Palacios. Originally from the town of Porriño, he put Madrid on the same level as other European capitals by building such significant buildings as the Cybele Palace and the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
The church was built between 1932 and 1937 in honour of the Virgin of Carmel, Star of the Sea, in an intricate style with elements of different origins. The bare stone walls are a common feature in the region, reminiscent of the Gothic and even Islamic styles. This is particularly noticeable in the dome, with tracery inspired by the polychromic Byzantine and Neo-Mudéjar designs.
