Esculca comes from the Latin word auscultare and means to observe carefully or try to discover or get to know something. This could be related to this place, since you can see a big part of the Rías Baixas from the Monte da Esculca hill.
At the top of this viewpoint, you can find the Cruz de Santiago (Cross of Saint James). This structure, which is more than seven meters in height, was built in 1950 by the mason Cesáreo Sanmartín per request of the mayor, Xosé María Massó García. It was set up in 1954, taking advantage of the fact Cardinal Quiroga was paying a visit. Originally, it was designed to be a lighthouse, and you can still see its channelled arms. Its shape, which reminds of Santiago’s sword, was assembled by parts embedded in a piece of iron, placed on top of a natural pedestal formed by a large rock. There is a scallop shell in the middle of the cross and, in front of it, there is a small altar used in the celebration of Santiago Apóstol, on July 25th.
