This Benedictine monastic church is first mentioned in a document from the Monastery of Lérez witnessed by the abbot of Tenorio in 1073. Pedro Madruga replaced the abbot with a monk from the Monastery of Lérez (Pontevedra) in the late 15th century, which resulted in the abandonment of the monastery because the monks did not accept that change. Later on, the monastery was a shelter for guerrilla fighters during the Spanish War of Independence and it was partially destroyed when the French army set in on fire. However, it was not completely abandoned until the ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizábal. Only the southwest part of the church and some pieces like the Agnus Dei or the rose window on the facade have been preserved from the old Romanesque architecture. The building was built on an earlier church in the 18th century.
