The area of Punta Moreiras, in front of the neighbourhood of Porto Meloxo, is the perfect spot to house the museum of salting. From the late 18th century to the mid-20th century, this cove was an important place for the sardine salting industry.
Today the site has two old salting factories that have been restored and can be visited on self-guided tours. They detail how the process of preserving sardines was in the past, and how it changed in 1931 with a dock for the transportation of goods. Additionally, this centre provides information about fishing and shellfish harvesting in the area, shipwrighting, marine engines, sealed cans, nets and rope-work, etc.
