It is a work by the sculptor Julio González Pola. In it you can see the figure of a sailor knocking down the Puerta de Gamboa with an axe, a woman that symbolises the victory and a soldier that holds up the enemy’s surrender.
It dominates the Plaza de la Independencia and it was built to celebrate the first centenary of Vigo’s Reconquest.
