The Portuguese Route consists of old paths running smoothly towards the north while passing through forests, fields, towns, villages and historic cities in Galicia. It is on level ground and goes through several medieval bridges. There are many churches, convents, wayside shrines and cruceiros (stone crosses) along the route, in which the image of Saint James accompanies the pilgrim. It also runs through populated areas like the Galician Rías Baixas, with plenty of restaurants and accommodation options. This pilgrimage is considered one of the hallmarks of European culture and although the motivation was religious at first, the influx of pilgrims from all over the world has become more of a cultural, economic and intellectual exchange.
