The Pazo de Barreiro is built with the structure of a defensive, strategic and rock-like Pazo: imposing, with thick walls, side wings, a stately balcony, stone steps where you can appreciate the passage of time, small windows, and enclosed courtyard, chapel, ramparts, the remains of defences that lend the property the nature of a strategic bastion of the different wars fought in Spain. It lies in a strategic position, on a mountainside, where vineyards, hamlets and terraced land (socalcos) dominate the setting. The first building, the do Coto Tower, harks back to the 14th century. The current tower, once peace had been made with the Lusitanians, and the ancestral home of the Troncoso Sarmiento de Lira y Sotomayor family, is from the 17th century. Its heyday was during the War of Independence, when it was home to the legendary Abbot of Villar y Couto, Mauricio de Troncoso de Lira y Sotomayor Saco y Quiroga, the leader of the popular uprising against the Soult army. This Pazo has seven double rooms and a suite for up to five persons with a fully furnished bathroom and TV
