The petroglyphs of Mogor are well-known in Galicia due to their labyrinth motifs. In the past the carvings were on seven rocks, but unfortunately today only three remain visible. Their patterns include cup marks, labyrinths, pseudo-labyrinths and some deer.
The most famous among them is the Labyrinth of Mogor, an uncommon motif in Galician rock art that has only been found in five other instances, all of them in the region of Rías Baixas. It is large, roughly carved and in very good condition. Its meaning has not yet been deciphered, but it closely resembles those found in Lapland, Finland, Iceland and England.
These petroglyphs have been known since at least the mid-nineteenth century, as they were featured in the book History of Galicia by Manuel Murguía in 1866. They have attracted considerable interest from the scientific community since their discovery. Over the years they have become one of the most emblematic rock art areas in Galicia, and they are relevant on an international scale as well.
