Construction built in the Middle Ages. The first documentary reference dates from the year 1158. It is located on the right bank of the Ribadil River. The only parts remaining nowadays are the tribute tower, part of the wall and several rooms. The historical importance of the Fornelos Fortress can be seen in the number of times it is named in the fights between Alfonso VII and his cousin Alfonso Enríquez, which resulted in the independence of Portugal. Sancho I of Portugal had donated this place to the founders of the Fornelos family, who became the owners of the fortress. The Fornelos Castle was destroyed in the second half of the 15th century during the Irmandiño revolts.
