A spring of medicinal mineral waters was discovered in the arid and uninhabited island of A Toxa in 1899, which resulted in the opening of the fist spa of La Toja. Since then, people from all over the world came to experience the benefits of its curative powers and the area became full of life. Opened in 1907 and built by the architect Vázquez-Gulías, this famous five-star hotel is situated in an exceptional area which offers views to the sea. En 1841 el químico y farmacéutico Antonio Casares halló en sus aguas termales calcio, hierro, magnesio y sodio, ideales para curar ciertas enfermedades. Años después, el marqués de Riestra, propietario de la isla, vio la oportunidad de negocio de los balnearios.

Tras iniciar un concurso internacional para la construcción de un gran hotel-balneario, en 1907 se inaugura el Gran Hotel, obra de Vázquez-Gulías. El edificio de dos cuerpos siguió la estructura de los grandes balnearios de la época: el francés de Vichy y el alemán de Baden-Baden.

En 1989, el Club Bildelberg escogió este emplazamiento para llevar a cabo una de sus reuniones anuales. Sus miembros, entre los que estaban los reyes de Bélgica, el magnate David Rockefeller o Henry Kissinger, lo eligieron por su absoluta tranquilidad. Durante esos años también se hospedaron allí personalidades como Gabriel García Márquez o Severo Ochoa. El premio Nobel de Medicina calificó el Gran Hotel como “un auténtico templo consagrado a la salud”.
